The beach in barra da Tijuca is a not-so-well-hidden gem in Rio, wider, longer and whiter than its more famous counterparts Copacabana and Ipanema.
Barra da Tijuca has a really beautiful, clean white beach that’s quieter and far less touristy than Rio’s more famous promenades. If you want a more relaxing day than in one of the more tourist-heavy spots, then make sure you check out Barra beach!
There’s a non-stop stream of activities at Barra beach, and the waves are big so surf is good. But beware, the current is strong, so try and keep close to where others are swimming. There are plenty of places along the beach to stop for food and drinks, and the Metro service at Jardim Oceanico will take you into downtown Rio for around 1$ each way. You’ll also find Brazil’s biggest shopping Mall, the New York City Centre nearby, which is well worth a visit!
