The world-famous Ipanema beach gives visitors a real sense of life in Rio, as well as some of the best surf in the city!
The beach is separated into different areas where you will find a variety of local subcultures, from the artsy, hipster types around Posto 9, to the favela kids in the Posto 8 area. Posto 10 is your area if you’re looking for some beach sports, and there are great spots for surf. But be warned, the current is strong here so be careful where you swim; Ipanema is indigenous for ‘bad, dangerous waters’, and it’s true to its name!
Ipanema beach is similar to the Copacabana, albeit less touristy and filled with more locals. The promenade showcases a great variety of shops, restaurants, bars and hotels, and Sunday is an especially good day to visit as the road is closed to traffic.
