If you want to hike up Table Mountain, then Skeleton Gorge is the route you should take! It is one of our absolute favourite hikes!
Skeleton Gorge is a ravine on Table Mountain, climbing through its Afromontane forest and leading to the Smuts Track. From there you can reach Maclear’s Beacon, the highest point of Table Mountain. This is one of the more well-known routes up, taking you from the southeast slopes across to the northwest corner. The hike covers a distance of just over 6km, gaining around 930 meters in elevation.
This hike takes in all the floral zones of Table Mountain, as well as giving you views in all directions at some point before you reach the summit, so this really is an impressive route to discover all the mountain has to offer. From Maclear’s Beacon, you get an absolutely breathtaking 360 degree view over Cape Town and out to the Ocean. Honestly, the views here are out of this world, you simply cannot visit Cape Town without taking this hike! And do not forget your camera!! (Made that mistake before!)
Some people take the cable car up, just wanting to experience standing on Table Mountain. We don’t recommend this; the hike up is perhaps the best and most beautiful part! We would say hike up Skeleton Gorge (or Nursery Ravine, an alternative route from the same starting point) then take the cable car down. That way you get to really enjoy the views and feel a sense of accomplishment! We promise it will be one of the highlights of your trip!
